Nationally known horror artist Glenn Chadbourne, of Newcastle, was featured in the May 21 edition of USA Today online, in a Book Buzz article, for his artistry in “The Dark Man,” by Stephen King.

Cemetery Dance Publications will publish “The Dark Man” in a hardcover edition, July 30.

According to USA Today, “The 88-page poem, featuring Chadbourne’s horror artwork, is considered something of a prequel to King’s apocalyptic epic “The Stand.”

The poem was written in 1969 when King was a UMaine, Orono student. Although it appeared in literary magazines at the time, it has never been published for the general public.

Chadbourne who has done extensive work for King, said he spent the bulk of the past winter working on the project. Chadbourne said the original poem he received was only three written pages.

“It’s my baby,” he said. “They gave me the text and then just let my imagination rip. They wanted between 70 and 90 pages and I gave them 88.”

He spent several months working 12 to 16 hours a day to come up with art for the project, including a half dozen different cover pages for the various editions.

“I am very proud of this project,” he said. “It is not every day you get something like this.”

Chadbourne has drawn the editorial page cartoons for The Lincoln County News for more than 20 years.

Cemetery Dance posted this earlier today:

Hi Folks!

The Dark Man by Stephen King received a very nice mention in USA TODAY’S Book Buzz today:

The Dark Man“Beware, for the Dark Man cometh! That is, the book The Dark Man by Stephen King, reigning master of scary tales. Cemetery Dance Publications will publish a hardcover edition of the title on July 30. It’s a change of pace for the author: The Dark Man is an 88-page poem featuring artwork by Glenn Chadbourne. Considered something of a prequel to his apocalyptic epic The Stand, it was written in 1969 when King was a student at the University of Maine. It appeared in literary magazines while he was in college, but has never before been published for the general public.”

Glenn Chadbourne’s longtime good friend Rick Hautala died unexpectedly on March 21, 2013, leaving his wife with bills that need to be paid.

Longtime Rick Hautala publisher Cemetery Dance has come up with an offer that will help benefit the Hautala family. It involves a special edition of Brian James Freeman’s Blue November Storms. From the CD website:

NOTE FOR COLLECTORS — SPECIAL COPIES TO HELP RICK HAUTALA’S FAMILY:

As you may already know, long-time Cemetery Dance author and friend Rick Hautala passed away suddenly earlier this month. Fundraiser efforts are currently under way to help his family in their time of need, and Glenn Chadbourne and Brian James Freeman have decided to create a special version of this novella to help speed that fundraising along.

We’re now accepting preorders for special copies of this novella featuring stunning COLOR REMARQUES by Glenn Chadbourne. Glenn will be donating his entire art fee to the Hautala family. Brian will also be donating all of his earnings from each of these special copies. (A remarque is an original drawing made in the actual book by the artist, which makes that copy of the book a unique collectible. You can see some of Glenn’s more elaborate color remarques here.)

These special copies will be also signed by Ray Garton, Brian James Freeman, and Glenn Chadbourne. Glenn is going all out to make these copies unique for the collectors who help us support the Hautala family and these remarqued versions of the book will ship approximately one month after the signed copies.

You can read about the book and order copies from the Cemetery Dance website.
